The Gower Way

Our group of 15 met at the Oxwich Bay Hotel on the Gower Peninsula, Wales, at 3 o’clock to stretch our legs on our first walk after our journey. The sun shone over the bay as the clouds sped across the sky and we set off from the hotel heading west. We stopped to admire Oxwich Castle before heading for Oxwich Green, catching glimpses of the sea shimmering below us. Our path took us through a farm and down an enclosed path lined with trees to reach the sea and the Coastal Path.

The Coastal Path is wonderful, a grassy track just above the shoreline with stunning views along the coast and across the Bristol Channel to North Devon and Lundy Island.

Returning to the Hotel for showers, welcome drinks and an excellent dinner, we enjoyed the evening  getting to know each other before retiring for a well earned night of rest.

After breakfast on Tuesday we gathered for our minibus transfer to Rhossili and our first sight of its breathtaking beach. We set off for our 10 mile walk back along the Coastal Path to Oxwich Bay. The path took us along the top of the cliffs, up and down craggy inlets past quiet, sandy beaches. Following a quick stop for lunch in the sun we headed on above the surging sea towards Port Eynon. Here we enjoyed a welcome cup of tea and the last part of the walk back to Oxwich – a wonderful day.

On Wednesday morning we left the village for our varied walk across fields, through woodland speckled with sunlight, parkland and onto moorland, climbing up to Penrice and into the Penrice Estate. Our path took us through contrasting landscapes whilst gradually climbing to Cefn Bryn (the spine of the Gower peninsula). Throughout, we enjoyed wonderful views across Three Cliffs Bay, Oxwich Bay and north across the estuary to Llanelli and beyond. A quick stop for lunch and the start of our descent where the path took us across farmland and on to the dunes at the far end of Oxwich Bay.   The breeze was in our faces as we headed back along the beach to the hotel for tea (& rugby for some!).

After breakfast and check out on Thursday morning some of the party started their journeys home whilst nine of us drove to Parc Le Breos for our final walk. A light shower did not dampen our spirits as we headed off through the park and on to part of the Gower Way. Heading towards Three Cliffs Bay we stopped for coffee and Welsh cakes whilst overlooking the bay from the top of the cliff. Our path took us back through the woods and finally towards the car park to finish our walk.

A great group, lovely hotel, fantastic weather and wonderful walks – perfect!
